A Second Gilded Age? Historical Parallels, Differences, Lessons

A daylong conference, asking experts in various disciplines to consider how, specifically, the present age compares with the last great period of inequality, and what should be learned, and not, from this history. Participants included Steve Fraser, Janet Gornick, Suresh Naidu, Paul Krugman, Devin Fergus, Rosanne Currarino, Julia Ott, Kimberley S. Johnson, ​Thomas Ferguson​, Kay Schlozman, Kim Phillips-Fein, Jeffrey Broxmeyer, Joshua B. Freeman, K. Sabeel Rahman, Elizabeth Clemens and Joseph Stiglitz.

This daylong conference is a joint venture, hosted in partnership with the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, co-sponsored by the history departments at The Graduate Center and George Mason University, and the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University, and presented with The Stone Center on Socioeconomic Inequality ​and ​The Society for History of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.

A New Deal for New York

This well-attended day-long conference addressed the original New Deal, its rollbacks and revivals in the second half of the twentieth century, and its potential as a model for the future. The gathering built upon Mike Wallace's new book, A New Deal for New York, which urges us to think boldly about rebuilding the entire city, not just Lower Manhattan, and to do so in tandem with other recession-wounded cities and states around the country.
